I’ve seen this movie before.
In the early 2000s, I was a Novell engineer.
I would go into businesses to manage their desktops, servers, and networks. I was helping them stay operational.
And I would say something that, at the time, sounded radical:
“You really should get a website.”
They would look at me like I had five heads.
“Why would we need a website?”
“What would that even do?”
“No one is going to look us up online.”
It felt optional.
It felt futuristic.
It felt unnecessary.
But it wasn’t.
The Businesses That Moved Early Won
The ones who listened?
They got:
- Strong domain names
- Long digital histories
- Early trust signals
- Early backlinks
- Early authority
- Years of accumulated visibility
And when search engines matured…
They were already positioned.
The ones who waited?
They spent years trying to catch up.
We Are at That Moment Again
Right now, I hear the same hesitation:
“Do I really need to change my website?”
“Is AI search actually going to matter?”
“Isn’t Google still enough?”
Google is still alive.
But behavior is shifting.
People are asking ChatGPT.
They’re using Perplexity.
They’re relying on AI summaries.
They’re accepting recommendations without clicking ten blue links.
And here’s what most businesses don’t understand:
You don’t get ten chances anymore.
You get included… or you don’t.

This Is Not About Hype
This is about visibility infrastructure.
When search engines became mainstream, your website became your digital storefront.
Now, your website is becoming your data source.
AI doesn’t admire your design.
It extracts your meaning.
If your business is not clearly defined as an entity…
If your services are vague…
If your credibility is implied instead of proven…
You are invisible in AI answers.
Not because you’re bad.
Because you’re unclear.
The Pattern Is the Same
In the early 2000s:
People didn’t understand why websites mattered.
Now:
People don’t fully understand why entity clarity matters.
But the pattern is identical.
Early movers gain leverage.
Late adopters fight uphill.
And Here’s the Hard Truth
I do believe we are heading toward consolidation.
We’ve seen it in hardware stores.
We’ve seen it in pharmacies.
We’ve seen it in retail.
When discovery changes, the clear and dominant players rise faster.
But here’s what’s different:
In this era, clarity can compete with size.
AI favors structured truth.
Not just brand budgets.
That means small businesses can win…. if they define themselves properly.
The Question Isn’t “Is This Happening?”
It is.
The question is:
Will you move early?
Or will you try to catch up later?
Because I can tell you from experience:
Catching up is always harder.
In the next post, I’m going to explain something even more uncomfortable:
Why I believe websites, as we know them, may start disappearing from the center of discovery.
And what that means for you.
