Toto SEO · First-party data · August 2026
For three months, our own website was one of the sources AI was quoting.
Between April 28 and June 25, 2026, Bing’s AI answers cited totoseo.com 6,837 times. Some days it was over 380.
On June 26, it stopped.
Not slowed. Stopped. Over the next 32 days we earned 27 citations total, and 18 of those came on a single day.
Nothing broke. There was no penalty, no hack, no blocked crawler, and no drop in the quality of the pages. We checked all of it.
What we found instead is the most useful lesson we have learned about AI visibility so far. And it applies to every manufacturer, contractor, and clinic we work with.
An AI citation profile built on a handful of pages does not decline gracefully.
It switches off.
First, What an AI Citation Actually Is
When someone asks a question and gets a written answer instead of a list of links, that answer is assembled from sources. The small numbered links beside it are citations.
Being one of them is the AI-era version of ranking. The difference is that there are usually four to ten slots instead of ten blue links.
You are either in the answer or you are not there at all.
Bing Webmaster Tools reports two things: how often your pages are used as a source, and how many of your pages are being used.
Those two numbers are the whole story of this post.
The Data

From our own Bing AI Performance export, 91 consecutive days:
| Period | Days | Total AI citations | Days with any citation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apr 28 – Jun 25 | 59 | 6,837 | 52 |
| Jun 26 – Jul 27 | 32 | 27 | 7 |
Daily volume ran between roughly 110 and 389 citations a day through June 25. Then it flatlined, with one blip of 18 on July 21.
The second number is the one that explains it.
Across all 91 days, the highest number of cited pages was 4.
Nearly seven thousand citations were coming from at most four URLs.
What We Ruled Out
Before drawing any conclusion, we eliminated the obvious causes. All of these were checked and cleared.
- Crawler blocking. Our robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, Bingbot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and the rest. Nothing was blocked, before or after June 26.
- Indexability. Homepage, robots.txt, and sitemap index all return 200. No stray noindex on the cited pages
- Page quality. The main cited page is 1,749 words with a full schema stack. It was healthy before the cliff and it is healthy now.
- AI visibility overall. This is the one that surprised us. We are still cited in 10 Google AI Overview answers today, including four prompts at 480 searches a month, and we hold the AI Overview block in position 1 on seven keywords.
Bing stopped. AI did not.
So this was never a technical problem.
It was a structural one.
The Diagnosis: Concentration and Cadence
Two things happened at the same time.
Concentration.
Four URLs carrying almost 6,800 citations is not strength. It is a single point of failure.
When a citation profile is spread across 30 pages and an engine reevaluates a few of them, you lose a slice. When it sits on four pages and the engine reevaluates those four, you lose everything in one week.
That is exactly the shape of our chart. A cliff, not a slope.
Cadence.
Our sitemaps show heavy blog output from April 23 through June 11. Then nothing new until July 7.
Twenty-six days of silence.
The cliff lands about two weeks after our last post before that gap, which is the normal lag for a freshness signal to work its way through. Publishing resumed July 7. The only blip after the cliff is July 21.
Read those two facts together and the mechanism is obvious. The pages the engine was leaning on were a very small set, and the signal that kept them looking current went quiet for almost a month.
You do not lose visibility because your content is old. You lose it when you break continuity.
This is the same lesson, measured in our own data.
For the Technical Reader
If you manage the site yourself, a few details matter more than the rest.
Bing rewards explicit submission far more than Google does.
IndexNow, or a manual submission in Bing Webmaster Tools, is a genuinely different signal path than waiting for a crawler to come back. If Bing is where your citations come from, this is not optional.
Sitemap lastmod accuracy matters.
A gap in real publishing becomes a gap in your timestamps, and that is the cheapest freshness proxy an engine has.
Watch cited pages, not total citations.
Total citations are volatile and mostly reflect query volume. Cited pages measures your actual surface area, meaning how many distinct assets are capable of being quoted at all. Ours was four. Anything under about ten means one reevaluation can zero you out.
Schema does not cause citations, but it tracks with them.
Schema has to be complete and it has to be accurate. When we audited our own 50 pages, we found the reverse of what we expected. Our strongest markup was already templated across most of the site. What we found instead were two real problems: one industry page had no FAQ markup at all, our blog posts had none either, and Offer and Review markup was being injected onto pages where it did not belong, like the privacy policy. Missing markup costs you citations. Inaccurate markup costs you trust. Audit for both
The Other Half of What We Found
While we were digging into the cliff, we pulled the actual source lists behind ten Google AI Overview answers in our space and counted who else was in them.
The most-cited competitor appears in seven of the ten. It wins with a blog post, not a service page.
A software vendor’s blog appears in five. A “top agencies” listicle appears in four.
Our competing page is a service page. We sit in slot five to nine of the source list. Never one or two.
That pattern held consistently enough to plan around.
AI answers prefer content that explains something over content that sells something.
If your only citable asset is a page whose job is to convert, you will be cited occasionally and late in the list. If you also publish the explanations, you become the source.
One more thing we did not expect. Our two best citation slots were not in our most competitive industry at all. They were in thinner ones, where we placed second and fourth in the source list instead of ninth.
Less contested topics are the cheapest citations available to almost anyone.
What We Changed
Five things, in the order we did them.
- Committed to a fixed weekly publishing rhythm. Not a campaign. Not a burst. A pace we can hold indefinitely.
- Started breaking our one large page into a cluster. One page cannot be the best answer to twelve different questions. A pillar page plus a dedicated page for each real intent, properly interlinked, is what tells a search engine you are a subject, not a URL that mentions one.
- Set a target of 20 to 30 citable surfaces instead of 4. Company facts, a definitions glossary, a real FAQ hub, industry pages with actual data. Surface area is resilience.
- Audited the schema on all 50 pages, not just the ones we assumed were fine. We found missing FAQ markup on an industry page and on every blog post, and Offer and Review markup on pages that sell nothing. Both are now being fixed.
If You Take One Thing From This
Most businesses measure AI visibility by asking, “Are we being cited?”
That is the wrong first question, because the answer can be a very impressive yes right up until the week it becomes no.
The better questions are:
- How many different pages of ours can be cited at all?
- Are we still publishing?
Concentration and silence are the two risks, and they compound.
We had both. Our numbers looked excellent. Then they did not.
The cliff did not weaken our case for this work. It sharpened it. We can now show a client exactly what fragile AI visibility looks like on a chart, and exactly what to build instead.
That diagnosis is the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI citation?
It is when an AI answer engine quotes your page as a source in the answer it writes. Not a click, not a ranking. Bing Webmaster Tools reports these under AI Performance, and Google reports them as AI Overview appearances in Search Console. You can be cited thousands of times and get very few clicks, which is exactly why you have to measure citations separately from traffic.
Why did our AI citations stop so suddenly?
Two reasons that compounded. Almost every citation we had was coming from a single page, and we went 26 days without publishing anything new. When an answer engine refreshes what it considers current and you have not given it anything new, one page carrying all of your visibility is a single point of failure. There was no penalty, no hack, no blocked crawler and no submission problem.
Does turning on IndexNow fix a drop in AI citations?
No. Ours was already running the entire time through Rank Math, submitting hundreds of URLs. IndexNow tells Bing that a URL changed. It cannot create a page worth quoting. If you are not publishing, automated submission has nothing to report.
Does schema markup cause AI citations?
Schema does not buy you a citation, but complete and accurate markup consistently tracks with the pages that get cited. Audit for both problems. Missing markup, like an FAQ section with no FAQPage schema, costs you citations. Inaccurate markup, like Offer or Review markup on a privacy policy page, costs you trust.
How often do we need to publish to hold AI visibility?
We are holding a weekly cadence, and the point is not the number. The point is never leaving a 26-day silence again. You do not lose visibility because your content is old. You lose it when you break continuity.
How do I check whether my own site is being cited?
Open Bing Webmaster Tools and look at AI Performance, then check the AI Overview data in Google Search Console. Look at two things beyond the totals: how many distinct pages of yours are ever cited, and whether the daily count has a cliff in it. If one page carries everything, you are one algorithm refresh away from zero.
